As MoFi Electronics puts it, “Hear music portrayed with intoxicating clarity, tonal balance, cohesiveness, and naturalism.”
Rockstar audio engineer Andrew Jones is well known from his days at KEF, Infinity, TAD, Pioneer, and ELAC. Now he’s with MoFi Electronics and has been working out of a studio in LA, developing the new SourcePoint series. The brief was to create a mid-century modern design, with a throwback to the seventies big woofers and studio systems. Deep and tight bass were to be central to the sound.
The SourcePoints are unusual in that they are a two-way point source design. Most point sources are three way, since the driver surrounding the tweeter is also a waveguide, so the less excursion the better. However, as Andrew says, “There is clearly a simplicity in a two-way. I’ve put a lot of work into optimizing the drive motor [resulting in a manageable and predictable excursion], and this plays a large part in the resultant performance.”
One of the key improvements of the SourcePoint 10 Master Edition over the acclaimed original model, is a three-way user-selectable enhanced crossover that betters the integration between the driver and tweeter units. This results in truly breathtaking tonal balance, imaging, cohesiveness, and naturalism during playback. Now, you can tailor the treble response to your preferences, allowing for smoother, more extended high-frequency performance. The high-grade build of the crossover, comprised of audiophile-caliber components and two separate circuit boards within the network, contributes further aural benefits in the form of ultra-low distortion and stunning clarity across the entire frequency spectrum.
Jones has spent well over two years developing the Master Edition. It is built to satisfy all types of listeners and to play every kind of music, whether you prefer relaxing or aggressive fare, acoustic or electric material, or listen to a broad scope of eras and artists.
The result of deep research, testing, and experimentation conducted in Jones’ private California studio, SourcePoint 10 is configured around a custom-tooled 10-inch concentric driver and a 1.25-inch soft-dome tweeter centered within the woofer cone. As part of this speaker’s point-source system, the cone acts as a waveguide for the tweeter to both match directivities and maximize the tweeter efficiency. It also plays with exceptional control, tonal balance, and accurate imaging. Working in absolute synchrony with the tweeter, the 10-inch paper-cone concentric driver keeps displacement to a minimum and helps deliver an accurate midrange, taut low-end, and powerful dynamics.
By using that large of a woofer, Jones kept cone displacement to a minimumeven for challenging low-end information. A corrugated surround that allows for improved linear excursion and minimizes diffraction corruption of the tweeter wave expansion. The “Twin Drive” magnet system for both the tweeter and woofer are designed around high-energy neodymium magnets that, when combined, produce an extremely linear low-distortion drive force and employ copper sleeves to further reduce nonlinear inductance.
SourcePoint’s sculpted 2″-thick fron baffle is a big part of the legend of this loudspeaker. With one-inch-thick real-wood veneer panels on the other three sides, and extensive internal bracing, you get the central theme of the SourcePoint 10 Master Edition: extremely low distortion, consistent linearity, and high bass output. Few other speakers can combine the detail, specificity, and cleanliness of a traditional bookshelf model with the punch, liveliness, and range of a tower.
Two large rear-firing vents that permit high bass output with low turbulence. The sculpted swept-back facets of the front baffle reduce the diffraction response errors typically encountered in conventional flat-baffle speakers.
Andrew Jones enjoys the benefits of working without fixed deadlines and budgetary constraints and with SourcePoint he carries on MoFi Electronics’ mission to create first-rate components that honor Mobile Fidelity’s studio heritage and help form a complete source-to-output chain that celebrates signal purity, faithfulness, and precision.
The SourcePoint 10 Master Edition is rated at 91dB sensitivity and works with a wide array of amplification sources. No matter where it’s employed, SourcePoint 10 Master Edition can be dialed-in with ease to deliver maximum performance in any environment. Complete with removable grilles, the SourcePoint 10 Master Edition is available without stands or with dedicated stands custom-designed to optimize the speakers’ placement and stability.
